rosacea oil cleansing

Rosacea oil cleansing has become a more popular practice, and for a good reason. It lessens the likelihood of worsening the condition through the use of harsh cleansers, and it provides nourishment for your compromised skin.

To cleanse with oil, you can use one pure carrier oil such as jojoba oil, castor oil, etc. However, some of the best cleansing oils for rosacea can be purchased as a mixture of nourishing oils and I have provided a list of my favorites toward the end of this guide.

What Is Rosacea?

face with rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that creates small, red bumps on the face. These bumps are pus filled and create areas of redness on the face.

The main cause of rosacea has yet to be completely understood. Although some believe genes may cause it, an overactive immune system or environmental conditions, spicy food and hot beverages also cause flare-ups in certain individuals. If rosacea is left untreated, it can cause the condition to worsen. Rosacea can be treated with antibiotics, anti-acne medications and by keeping the skin clean and hydrated.

Rosacea often presents itself in women who are middle-aged and have white skin. Rosacea is often confused with other skin conditions like acne or rashes. The key symptoms of rosacea, however, present as small pus-filled lumps accompanying redness.

What Is An Oil Cleanser?

Simply put, oil cleansing is taking skincare oils and using them to replace your ordinary cleanser. Examples of oils used in oil cleansing include jojoba oil, castor oil, grapeseed oil and many more. Different oils can have varying effects on different skin types.

Oil cleansing may sound a bit strange to some, and it is of no surprise. Particularly with many warnings claiming that applying oils to your face can worsen skin conditions like acne, it can be tempting to avoid these products all together.

However, research has begun to discover the benefits these oils can pose to our skin and their ability to treat certain skin conditions. Of course, each individual’s skin is different, and caution is always necessary. However, many people trying the oil cleansing method find it cleansing, healing and soothing, particularly for sensitive skin types.

For some, the oil cleansing method for rosacea is a great way to gently cleanse the skin, remove makeup, soothe the skin and reduce acne.

Should You Use An Oil Cleanser For Rosacea?

Oil cleansing can be a good option for those dealing with rosacea as oil cleansing will not interfere with the skin barrier which is usually damaged when experiencing rosacea.

Because of this, oil cleaning can assist in reducing the appearance of rosacea by helping to soothe and heal it.

Choosing the oils you want to cleanse with can often make a big difference in the healing process of rosacea. Some benefits of using the oil cleansing method for rosacea include soothing and hydrating the skin by feeding the skin oils that provide nutrients to nourish and heal including essential fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

Other benefits include improving your skin barrier. This is particularly important with rosacea as the skin barrier is already compromised. The oil cleaning method allows the oil to bind to the sebum without disturbing your skin barrier or natural oil production.

How To Do Rosacea Oil Cleansing

To effectively perform the rosacea oil cleansing method, follow the steps below.

  • Choose an unrefined carrier oil, a mix of carrier oils or your favorite product for purchase. I have provided some of my favorite options in the next section.
  • Tip a decent amount of your oil/oils in the palm of your hands and rub them together to warm the oil/s.
  • Do not wet your face. Once warmed, apply the oil/s all over the face, massaging it on your dry skin for 30 seconds to one minute.
  • Take a cloth with some warm water and gently wipe the oil from your face. A microfibre cloth is the best option for wiping off your oil/s as it is very gentle on the skin. However, those with more extreme cases of rosacea may find a cloth too disruptive to the skin barrier. In this case, you may be interested in a cleansing oil that does not require cloth removal which I have provided in the next section.
  • If you find there is still a lot of residual oil on your face, you can then wash your face with a micellar water.
  • Note: It is best to only oil cleanse once a day. If you wear makeup during the day, it is best to perform your oil cleanse at night to ensure you are only cleansing once a day.
