Jojoba oil is a great product if you’re looking for a natural way to moisturize and protect your hair. It does not moisturize your hair like other oils because it does not penetrate your hair’s shaft. However, it can effectively trap moisture into your hair while also protecting it from damaging heat and chemicals.

I love a good hair mask. Jojoba oil is the perfect ingredient to use in a hair mask. Keep reading to learn why including all the benefits of using jojoba oil in your hair and exactly how to use it.

What Is Jojoba Oil?

jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is not really an oil at all, rather, it is a waxy oil that has a somewhat oily texture. Because it is not a true oil, it is very effective for use on the body and skin. This is because it mimics the natural oil produced by our skin. This means that it can help moisturize and balance our skin and hair.

Jojoba oil comes from the jojoba plant which is native to parts of Mexico, Arizona, and California. People have been using jojoba oil for centuries as a natural way to keep their skin and hair healthy.

There are two different kinds of jojoba oil: refined and unrefined. Unrefined oil is the best to use because it retains all of its beneficial ingredients. Refined oil loses much of its nutrients and vitamins, but lasts longer and has no scent.

Is Jojoba Oil Good For Hair?

It is a great idea to use jojoba oil for your hair because it has a lot of properties that can get your hair looking and feeling better.

Because jojoba oil has an oily composition, it makes an effective moisturizer for your hair. It also acts as a wonderful protector against heat damage, dryness, and breaking.

It is so nourishing for the hair because it is packed full of beneficial vitamins and minerals like vitamins C, B, E, as well as copper and zinc.

Not only does it help heal your hair itself, but it can also heal the skin of your scalp. By making your scalp healthier, jojoba oil can potentially increase the thickness of your hair, and it can help heal dandruff.

What Are The Benefits Of Jojoba Oil For Hair Treatment?

Jojoba oil has a lot of wonderful properties and is very effective at treating your hair.

It Moisturizes & Protects Hair

Like many oils, jojoba oil is great at moisturizing your hair. However, because jojoba oil is not a true oil, it does not moisturize the same way that other oils do.

Most oils penetrate the hair to moisturize the hair from the inside out. Jojoba oil is not able to penetrate the hair because it is so light, and because it is a wax ester rather than an oil.

Instead, it forms a protective barrier on the hair, shielding it from heat, sun, chemicals, and other forms of pollution.

The protective barrier that jojoba oil forms on hair also helps to keep moisture locked inside your hair. Although it’s not going to create the moisture itself, jojoba oil can lock in moisture from a different source.

You can mix jojoba oil with another product that does naturally penetrate the hair and moisturize. Or, you could apply jojoba oil directly after a shower when your hair is wet with water.

It May Prevent Hair Loss & Promote Thickness

Can you use jojoba oil for hair loss treatment?

Many people love jojoba oil because they claim that it can reduce hair loss and can promote hair growth. There is no scientific evidence to back up this claim directly, although there is anecdotal evidence.

Rather than directly promoting hair growth, it’s more likely that jojoba oil simply provides an environment for optimal hair growth.

Jojoba oil is rich in nutrients and vitamins like vitamins B, C, and E. It is also rich in copper and zinc. These nutrients naturally repair and heal the hair and scalp. When your hair and scalp are at their peak of health, then your hair is more likely to grow, and less likely to fall out.

It Promotes Curls

Anyone with curly hair knows how frustrating it can be to make your curls look nice. If you don’t take proper care of them, you’re left with lackluster curls that are frizzy and dry.

Most people shouldn’t need too many extra hair products to keep their hair silky and smooth. Your scalp is supposed to do a good job of that on its own.

Your skin produces sebum — an oil that is naturally created by your body. In straight hair, this sebum travels from the scalp all the way to the tips of your hair, naturally moisturizing it. However, sebum has a hard time  winding its way through curls, so you’re often left with curls that are malnourished and dry.

Jojoba oil’s composition is almost identical to sebum, making it the perfect moisturizer for your hair. You simply need to apply a bit of sebum to your hair regularly to mimic that natural nourishment that your body strives to give you.

It Can Treat Dandruff & Promote Scalp Balance

One of the reasons that jojoba oil is so popular for use on the skin is because it contains antibacterial and antifungal properties. This makes it very effective in treating the causes and symptoms of infections.

Because jojoba oil is so close to sebum in composition, it helps to balance the amount of oil that your body produces.

Researchers believe that because jojoba oil matches the composition of sebum, that you can “trick” your scalp into believing that it has already produced enough oil. This is very effective for people who deal with overly oily hair.

Exactly How To Make A Jojoba Oil Hair Mask

Now that you know how wonderful jojoba oil is, you probably want to use it on your hair. Here are some of my favorite recipes:

It is best to apply this mask no more than twice a month. This mask is best used for general hair health and upkeep.

You can also heat up the oil after applying by wrapping your head in a warm towel, or heating your hair with a blow dryer. Then, massage the mask into your hair from root to tip and allow the mixture to rest in your hair for about 30 minutes before washing the mixture off with shampoo.

This next hair mask recipe is best used for excessively oily-prone hair.

How To Use Your Jojoba Oil Hair Treatment

jojoba oil

There are a few ways that you can use jojoba oil in your hair, so it’s quite easy to use for anyone.

Apply It Directly On Your Hair

Applying jojoba oil directly to your hair is likely the most beneficial way of using the oil, although it can take more time and patience. Jojoba oil is a carrier oil and is extremely gentle on the skin. Because of this, you don’t need to mix it with anything and can apply it to your hair in its pure form. However, you can add a few drops of essential oil as well if you’d like a refreshing scent, or more healing properties.

You can apply jojoba oil to your hair as-is, or you can heat it up a bit. It’s thought that using heated oil can help increase the benefits to your hair and scalp.

You don’t need to use much, either. Just one tablespoon will do for short hair, or two tablespoons for long hair.

Unlike your everyday conditioner that you only use to treat the ends of your hair, you’re going to work the jojoba oil from your scalp, all the way down to the tips of your hair. Just be sure not to put too much of the oil on your scalp, or you may clog your pores. Only one or two drops is needed to hydrate your scalp or treat dandruff.

You’re going to want to leave the jojoba oil in your hair for about 20-30 minutes to let it work its magic, then you’re going to rinse it out with shampoo.

Add It To Your Favorite Beauty Products

This method is much easier than applying pure jojoba oil directly to your hair, however, it may not be as effective.

All you need to do is place a bit of your favorite hair product in your hand and add 3-5 drops of jojoba oil. Make sure to mix the two products up thoroughly, and use your product as usual.

If you prefer to premix all of your products at once, you can do that too. Simplay add one or two tablespoons of jojoba oil to your favorite product, depending on the size of the bottle. Before every use, be sure to thoroughly mix the bottle so that the jojoba oil is evenly distributed.

Purchase Beauty Products That Contain Jojoba Oil

By far the easiest way to use jojoba oil is to simply buy products that already contain jojoba oil as an ingredient. Doing so will make your life much easier as you won’t have to take any extra steps.

However, I will caution against this method because it may not be as effective as the others. Most beauty products use refined jojoba oil because it lasts longer, and is colorless and odorless. But, refined jojoba also lacks most of the nutrients and vitamins that are beneficial to your hair.

Conclusion

Jojoba oil is a great product to be used in a hair mask because it nourishes and protects hair. Unlike other oils that simply moisturize your hair, jojoba oil can lock-in moisture and protect your hair from chemicals, heat, and other pollutants.

Because it is a gentle oil, you can easily mix it with other ingredients, so there is no limit to what kinds of hair masks you can create.
