Have you ever thought about using cocoa butter for lips? If you’ve used cocoa butter before, you know that it’s a great moisturizer and can make your skin really soft. Because of that, you might be wondering if it can work just as well on your lips.
The lips are one of the most sensitive areas of your body. As such, they become dry easily and are prone to damage.
Ironically, most commercial lip balms contain ingredients that are harmful to our lips.
Maybe you know that already, and that’s why you’re looking for a natural solution. Well, you’re in luck because cocoa butter works well on lips, and it will have your lips smelling like chocolate!
Below, I cover why cocoa butter is good for lips and all the benefits it has for your lips. I also cover exactly how to use cocoa butter on your lips for the best results including some great cocoa butter lip recipes.
What Is Cocoa Butter?
We extract cocoa butter from the cocoa bean. The cocoa bean comes from the cocoa plant, otherwise known as Theobroma cacao.
You can find the cocoa plant in parts of West Africa, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Yet, West Africa produces more than 50% of the world’s total cocoa butter.
People have been using cocoa butter for over 3,000 years as a moisturizer because it works so well.
With a name like “cocoa” butter, you might be wondering if it has any relation to chocolate. It does! Cocoa butter and chocolate are both made from cocoa beans. But, they consist of different parts of the cocoa bean.
To extract the parts of the bean, the bean is roasted, stripped, and pressed. The cocoa powder is then separated from the cocoa butter. Cocoa powder is what we use to create chocolate, while cocoa butter is what we use to moisturize our skin.
Cocoa butter is actually a type of fat which is what makes it great for moisturizing. Because it’s a fat, it is able to easily penetrate the surface of the skin. This locks in moisture for prolonged hydration.

There are lots of cocoa butter lip balm benefits. You can even use cocoa butter as a scrub or lip gloss.
Is Cocoa Butter Good For Chapped Lips?
Cocoa butter. Chapped lips.
Cocoa butter will keep your skin moisturized. It will also heal your damaged skin and prevent aging. It is especially good for people will severely dry and cracked lips because it can help heal mouth sores.
Cocoa Butter For Lips Benefits
Fortunately, there are many cocoa butter benefits for lips.
Cocoa Butter Is Moisturizing
The main reason people seek out lip care is to add moisture to their cracked and painful lips. Cocoa butter is a fat that easily penetrates the layers of the skin and locks in moisture.
Cocoa Butter Protects Your Lips From The Elements
We expose our lips to so many harsh things every day. They deal with sun, pollutants, extreme temperatures, and food. Even talking too much can dry out your lips and make them painful!
It also provides a protective layer between your lips and the environment.
It is important that we work to protect our lips. They don’t contain the natural defenses that the rest of our skin has.
The skin on the rest of our body produces a protective layer of oil called sebum. Sebum keeps the skin hydrated and moisturized. Our lips do not have oil glands to produce this oil. They also lack the protective outer layer covering the rest of our skin.
Cocoa Butter Repairs Damaged Skin
Lips are sensitive, so they are often the first to suffer damage. Nothing feels worse than dry, chapped, damaged lips.
The antioxidants and nutrients in cocoa butter improve blood flow. This heals damaged skin cells and promotes the growth of new, healthy skin cells.
Cocoa Butter For Hyperpigmentation & Aging
You can use cocoa butter for dark lips as well as lips that are aging.
Cocoa butter contains antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E. These antioxidants fight free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for damaging and aging our skin.
If you regularly use cocoa butter, you’ll notice your lips look plumper and softer. It can also reduce the signs of hyperpigmentation like age spots that may pop up on your lips.

Exactly How To Use Cocoa Butter On Lips
There are many ways you can use cocoa butter on your lips. My favorite ways are below.
Note that you can also simply apply cocoa butter straight to your lips.
Cocoa Butter Lip Balm
One of the best and nicest ways to use cocoa butter for chapped lips is by using a cocoa butter lip care stick. But don’t go out and buy this.
Commerical cocoa butter formula lip balm can include lots of additives that may do harm than good to your lips.
The good news is that it’s very easy to make your own pure cocoa butter lip balm. Here is a recipe below…
Cocoa Butter Lip Balm Recipe
This is a great recipe for making your own moisturising DIY cocoa butter lip balm. A little goes a long way with lip balm and this is enough to make six homemade cocoa butter lip balm tubes.
- Get everything out and ready to go including any lip balm tubes open and ready
- Set up your double boiler with a couple of inches of water on low-medium heat.
- Add the cocoa butter, candelilla wax and coconut oil
- Melt while stirring gently until all is melted and mixed. This will likely take around 10 minutes
- Remove from heat
- Use the dropper/syringe or a funnel or measuring cup with spout to carefully pour the mixture into the lip balm containers while it’s still hot and liquid. Warning, it solidifies quick
- Let them completely cool. Wait at least six hours as they can break inside if you twist the tube too early
I believe this is the best cocoa butter lip balm. But, if you don’t like lip balm, you can use cocoa butter for lip gloss, lip butter, or lip scrub.
Cocoa Butter Lip Gloss
I love this lip gloss recipe because it’s simple to make and it leaves your lips shiny and glowing.
- Add the oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax to a double boiler and melt over medium-high heat
- Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the essential oils
- Once melted, pour the mixture into a glass container or lip balm container while the liquid is still hot
- Ready to use
Once ready, just use as you would any other lip gloss or lip balm.
Cocoa Butter Lip Scrub
This lip scrub combines the healing properties of cocoa butter, orange, shea butter, and beeswax. After using it, your lips will feel soft, smooth, and hydrated.
- Add the shea butter, cocoa butter, and beeswax to a microwavable-safe bowl
- Microwave the ingredients on high for 60 seconds or until melted
- Be sure to stop the microwave and stir your mixture every 20 seconds
- Remove the mixture from the microwave and stir in the sugar and essential oils
- Place the bowl of sugar scrub in the freezer for 5-10 minutes to harden
- Use a spoon to add the sugar scrub into a glass container for storage
The orange essential oil is great for adding a little chocolatey-orange flavor to your lips. If you prefer, you can switch out the orange with peppermint essential oil for a fresher taste.
To use, massage a small amount of the scrub onto your lips using your fingers. You can either lick away the leftover scrub or wash it off with warm water.
I know from personal experience how painful and uncomfortable chapped lips can be. Combine that with mouth sores, and you just won’t have a good time.
The great news is that cocoa butter is exceptionally good for use on your chapped lips. It can heal damaged skin cells to moisturize your lips and have them feel like new again. If you’re suffering from painful mouth sores, cocoa butter can help with that too.
Even if the skin on your lips is normal, you should still give cocoa butter a try. It will keep your lips hydrated and have them looking and feeling younger.
Best of all, your lips will smell and taste like chocolate!
Just give it time. You’ll love your cocoa butter lips.
